Entomology, and butterflies in particular, have always fascinated me. Their transformative powers turn them from chunky catepillars into true works of art.
The Angola White Lady is a common butterfly found throughout Africa. The catepillars of this butterfly family have an osmetrium - a gland behind the head that extends in danger and looks like two long orange-red horns.
This species shows ploymorphism in wing appearance, though this is limited to females. Females can mimic at least 14 “morphs” in pattern and coloration making them less susceptible to prey by appearing to be poisonous or sidestepping harassing male mating attemps by appearing to be male.
Over-harvesting and habitat destruction continually threaten the species and in Equatorial Guinea, Togo, and Angola, the butterflies are considered endangered. A free pollinator seed packet is included with purchase to help all pollinating insects, like butterflies, thrive.
